Information om boken fick jag av Ola Hedin på Creatur. Ola visade mig en enkel modell som förklarar det mesta för den som strävar efter att öka kvaliteten på sin verksamhet, oavsett vad man håller på med. Tänk dig en triangel med kvalitet högst upp – och det är den som är målet. Vad bidrar? Hårdvara och mjukvara. Yin och Yang, vetenskap och konst. Manligt och kvinnligt. I den svenska skoldebatten just nu är till exempel hela fokus på Yang, hårdvara och vetenskap. Så tacklar regeringen problemet – man skriver om hårdvaran (skollag, läroplaner, styrdokument). Man utökar kontrollerna via skolinspektionen. Man inför  fler mätmetoder via flera prov och en flergradig betygsskala längre ner i åldrarna. Man tvingar skolledare till kurser om juridik och ekonomi. Varför gör man detta? Det är helt enkelt så att vi har slarvat med den ”hårda” sidan, och på så sätt gör regeringen rätt.

Men glömmer man bort mjukvaran, Yin och konsten, så uppnår man knappast någon kvalitetsförbättring. Man vinner bara kontroll, och kontroll räcker bara till halva vägen. Vilka beståndsdelar har den mjuka sidan? Den består av ledarskap, kommunikation, kreativitet, relationer, flexibilitet och anpassning. Hur lär man sig det? Tja, inte genom en kurs om budgetramar och löneadministration i alla fall.

Två nya pedagoger med samma grundutbildning kommer till sin skola – en person lyckas strålande med sina grupper och får bra resultat. Den andra klarar sig inte alls lika bra. Förklaringen till detta ligger snarare på konstsidan än på vetenskapssidan – de har ju samma utbildning, men de är två helt olika personligheter och har olika sätt att få elevernas förtroende.

När båda tingen klaffar – hårdvaran och mjukvaran harmonierar -  ja, då blir det kvalitet. Strama upp den hårda sidan, det behöver vi i svensk skola, men glöm aldrig bort konsten. Den är en lika viktig del av förklaringen till varför det fungerar i vissa skolor.

Självklart, säger du! Visst är det så. Det tog mig bara 35 år att komma på det.

We commonly underestimate the importance of the heart and overestimate the importance of the brain. Knowing information (smoking is bad, overeating is bad, exercise is good) is one thing, but The Elephant often stops us. Motivate The Elephant by, for example, shrinking the change. Changing ”clean the house” to ”a five minute raid on one room” changes perspective and we understand how manageable that is. Want to change the procurement culture of a big corporation? The authors give the example of a person who gathered all the different safety gloves that were bought by the company. He placed price tags on them and dumped them on a board room table. It was a jolt of reality and radically reformed buying procedures by hitting the emotions – ”This is crazy. We absolute must change our routines.”

Don’t forget the environment. Their favorite example is changing the size of popcord boxes (or plates) and radically reducing overeating. Think about all the environmental factors in a school which actually increase poor student behavior, especially for the ”at risk” kids.

The book is full of good examples. It was a pleasure to read and a great reminder that change is indeed possible – and probable – when we take care to plan a strategy that reaches the heart and improves the environment.

Den andra boken innehåller artiklar av en mängd olika forskare som berättar om experiment och undersökningar kring just lärande med hjälp av mobiltelefonen. Denna bok var mer up to date och innehöll många goda exempel. Där fick jag t ex lära mig att datakraften i dagens moderna mobiltelefoner motsvarar datakraften i en PC från mitten av 1990- talet. Dagens enklaste mobiler har mer datakraft än de datorer som skickade en man till månen 1969. Dessutom använder dagens mobiler en hundradel av den energi som användes i datorer från mitten av 90-talet.

The articles range from a diagnosis of the marvelous dog whisperer, Cesar Milan, to the talent-is-everything blindness that brought down Enron to the tale of serial killer profilers at the FBI. Each article brings a surprise. Each article almost always turns upside down your preconceived notions. Gladwell’s use of statistics is fascinating. Knowing that 5% of all cars spew out 50% of all pollution makes you wonder why those cars aren’t taken off the road. Knowing that some teachers achieve so very much more than others makes you wonder why the evaluation of teachers is not more scientific or even interesting to city governments. Why do we assume that a better university education almost always yields more talent or effectiveness? Why is the job interview a terrible way to judge a person’s potential contribution at work?

If you like reading to learn and if you like reading with a smile on your face, well, then, read this book.

It is the story of a business man who wants to turn around his business. He returns a jacket that was mixed up in a restaurant and it turns out the jacket is owned by the head of the Napoleon Hill Foundation. This leads to travels interviewing successful people and the wisdom learned from these meetings.

The basic book concept is based on an old and famous story about R.U. Darby who gave up on his dreams of becoming rich by prospecting for gold, a mere three feet before a major gold vein was hit. He didn’t understand how gold veins run and in his frustration just gave up.

Of course, this book reminds us to never give up. Yes, okay – it’s classical American in style and message – but who cares – I am American – and these stories simply fascinate me. What works? Why do some people succeed and fulfill their dreams while others do not? Well – you guessed it. The successful people just don’t quit. They get the information they need, the help they need and they just don’t stop.

Is there a formula for success? Sure (well, it is an American book)… (P+T) x AxA = Success. Passion plus Talent times Association (relationships with the right people) times Action. Discover your life purpose as you utilize your talent and passion. Align yourself with people that know more than you and know more people than you know. Write those checklists and to-do lists and start doing what you need to to do to get to the next step.

Alright, I will admit there is little connection between happiness and wealth or happiness and success, but it sure is nice to feel that your efforts are rewarded and you are able to do the things you love. I enjoyed Three Feet from Gold. I love those golden reminders.

Some headings that may intrigue you as they did me:

• How curiosity can improve my relationships

For example on this last point we are reminded about the importance of asking instead of telling. Perhaps we want to sell an idea, a product or our services, but telling what we do is not as good as asking what others do and to hear their needs. Yeah, sure, we all know the importance of listening, but do we do it in a way that makes the other person really want to see us, get to know us and to keep up the contact? It’s those long term relationships that can lead to mutual benefit. This book was a good reminder with many practical examples.

Who isn’t in the marketing and influencing business these days? Is there a teacher, a principal, a leader, a receptionist, a plumber or a nurse that’s shouldn’t think about how their actions attract students, clients or customers – or how they can win over colleagues with their ideas?

Beställ: Profits Aren’t Everything, They’re the Only Thing

George Cloutier’s book, Profits Aren’t Everything, They’re the Only Thing gave me a good kick in the pants. What works? What generates profit? Am I aware of what expenses lead to which income? Do I really focus on what gives the best effects? I am noticing, as are many small business people in these turbulent times, that old solutions are not working. So what to do? The least one can do is to figure out what IS working and not apologize for the fact that a business does have to turn a profit. In my own case I need profits to finance my writing. I am not an Astrid Lindgren, a Håkan Lindqvist nor even a John Steinbeck. I am a John Steinberg writing for a rather limited audience in Swedish!

While you can’t and shouldn’t just think about the money and profits, surely it is wise to give yourself a reminder that it is important to have a good understanding of what brings profits and how you do this most effectively.

Det har varit glest med boksammanfattningar på senare tid. Det beror på att jag mest har läst romaner och jag berättar inte om dem på denna blogg. Jag har läsperioder och just nu har jag en skrivperiod. Nåväl – det jag skulle berätta om är den bästa bok jag har läst på år och dag om pedagogik.

Med mitt intresse för klassrumsforskning skäms jag lite grand för att inte ha vetat om denna bok mycket tidigare. The Teaching Gap av James W. Stigler och James Hierbert är ett resultat av omfattande forskning som försöker förklara skillnaderna mellan olika länders utbildningsresultat – en konsekvens av den berömda THIMMS- undersökningen. Bland annat har man spelat in ett 50-tal matematiklektioner från USA, Tyskland och Japan. I THIMMS- studien har USA sämst resultat och Japan bäst resultat. Forskarnas hypotes var att det finns bättre och sämre lärare i varje land och de hoppas kunna avslöja vad de bästa gör rätt och de sämsta gör fel.

Nej. Deras slutsats blev helt annorlunda. Skillnaden berodde på klassrumskultur och undervisningskultur i varje land, snarare än hur enskilda pedagoger gjorde. M a o japanska lärare överlag undervisar annorlunda än amerikanska lärare. Japanska lärares sätt är kvalitativt bättre och därför lyckas de. I matematik t ex låter japanska lärare eleverna enskilt och i grupper lösa problem som sedan diskuteras intensivt. I USA presenteras mera en metod som alla ska följa för att lösa ett problem. Läraren avslöjar allt som oftast själv lösningen och eleverna tar efter. Resultatet är att japanska elever har bättre förståelse, problemlösningsförmåga och ett självständigare tänk kring matematik. De kan tekniken och de har förståelsen. I bästa fall behärskar amerikanska elever god teknik men de saknar insikter. Länderna har, som författarna uttrycker det, olika ”kulturella manus” för hur undervisning går till. Visst är det intressant!

Dessa kulturella skillnader är inte lätta att överbrygga. De är ju en del av landets kultur, men givetvis kan en förståelse för skillnaderna bidra till utveckling. Noterbart är särskilt en passage i boken som beskriver den japanska lektionstiden som helig. INGEN skulle komma på att avbryta en lektion för andra aktiviteter, utrop i högtalare eller skolfotografering. I USA visar det sig att 36 % av lektionerna avbryts eller störs på något sätt. Nog är det likadant i Sverige, och om man inte avbryter lektioner, så ställs de in för teater, friluftsdagar, hemspråk, matrådsgrupp eller vem vet vad – så inte kan man precis påstå att lektionen är helig här. Långt ifrån. Och det är EN förklaring till resultatskillnaderna. Effektiva minuter för undervisning minskar allt mer i Sverige och USA och därmed försämras resultaten.

Japanska lärare utsätts inte heller för reform efter reform däremot för intensiv utvärdering av det de gör i klassrummet. Sakta men säkert ska man utvecklas. (Känner vi inte igen detta som ett kulturellt drag – tänk Toyota.) Det finns ett noga uträknat system för professionell utveckling med fokus på undervisningskvalitet. Syftet är att göra alla till bättre lärare – det är själva undervisningen som granskas. Nå, hur många studiedagar eller arbetslagsmöten har du deltagit i detta år som direkt har som syfte att öka din undervisningsskicklighet? Har du diskuterat med en kollega hur du kan bli bättre på att undervisa i det som du har ansvar för? Jag hoppas det.

Hjälp dig själv och dina kollegor att bearbeta, utvärdera och utveckla undervisningspraxis. Förstå vår egen undervisningskultur och dina egna ”lektionsmanus” och tillvägagångssätt. ”Så brukar jag göra” är inte nödvändigtvis en förklaring. Det är kanske snarare så att det är ”Så brukar vi alla göra” som är orsaken till varför det är som det är. Granskar vi vår undervisningskultur med ett öppet sinne, kan vi få nya impulser.

Kohn is most critical of the movement towards standardized tests. In his book What Does It Mean to be Well Educated, Kohn has collected his essays on standards, grading and testing (and other follies as he puts it). It is a fine collection and a should be widely read. In the first essay Kohn poses the interesting question that is the title of the book. Because most testing is at the fact level students are graded on their short term memories. But knowing dates, names and terminology – is that the same thing as being well educated and prepared to defend and develop our democracy? Kohn thinks not.

The effort to standadize education with national and state testing is self-defeating says Kohn. We are creating less educated students as when we ”teach to the tests” and do not have time to engage students in a dialog nor offer them other programs that make them well-rounded. (American school districts are cutting back on art, sports and music programs for make room for more test oriented memory teaching.)

Alfie Kohn is an important voice in the desperate effort to improve educational systems and should be read by any educator who is serious about what education should and can be about. Explore any Internet bookstore to discover his many other titles, but this one gives a good summary.

It is a book that describe the ”hidden benefits of disorder”. It not only gives everyone an excuse for non-order, but explains even why that may not be even good. Don’t worry be messy (just not around me).
